The recommended planting density for Hybrid Cocoa is 1333 plants per hectare, with a spacing of 3 metres between rows and 2.5 metres between plants within the same row.
This spacing ensures optimum growth and efficient use of the land. When establishing a cocoa crop in a forested area, a number of steps are recommended.
Firstly, the land needs to be cleared and the large trees felled. However, it is advisable to leave the shrubs well distributed to provide shade for the first 2 to 3 years of cocoa growth. If the trees are completely felled, it is advisable to plant banana trees in the inter-rows six months to a year before planting the cocoa trees, maintaining the same density.
Seedlings from the nursery should be planted between May and June, when the rainy season is well established.
