Penja pepper is an exceptional variety of pepper, often considered to be one of the best in the world, if not the best. It belongs to the Piper Negrum family, which makes it a genuine pepper, unlike tailed pepper, Timiz long pepper or Sichuan pepper, for example.

The history of this fascinating pepper dates back to colonial times, when Antoine Decré, a banana planter in Penja, took the initiative of growing a few vines of Piper Negrum from India on the volcanic soils of Penja, in Cameroon.

Because of the exceptional quality of Penja pepper, cultivation was subsequently extended to other regions of Cameroon. We owe this pepper to a Frenchman, Antoine Decré, a banana planter in Penja, who one day decided to plant some piper negrum vines from India on the volcanic soil of Penja.

This was during the colonial era. Given the quality of Penja pepper, cultivation subsequently spread to other regions of Cameroon.
